It's going to be a fun season across Major League Baseball.
Well, that is the case most years.
There was a lot of movement throughout the offseason and now Spring Training is here. Over the next month, there will be players left and right looking to earn jobs across the league. When the season actually begins, there will be plenty of breakout performances on the horizon.
With that being said, here is one breakout candidate for each American League East team.
Boston Red Sox — Marcelo Mayer
Mayer played in 44 games in 2025 and is now expected to be in play for a significant role for the organization. There was a time when he was ranked higher as a prospect than Roman Anthony. He'll have an opportunity to show what he can do in 2026.
New York Yankees — Cam Schlittler
The 25-year-old righty had a 2.96 ERA in 14 starts in 2025 before a memorable series-winning start against the Red Sox in the playoffs. If healthy, this kid could be in for a big year. He showed he can have success in 2025; he should be in line for a consistent role all season in 2026.
Toronto Blue Jays — Trey Yesavage
This one's pretty easy. Yesavage made three appearances in the regular season as a rookie and was an important piece in the playoffs as well. He had a meteoric rise in 2025, now expect even more in 2026.
Baltimore Orioles — Samuel Basallo
Another easy one. If Basallo has a consistent opportunity, he should be very good for the Orioles in 2026. He played in 31 games in 2025 for the Orioles and is the team's top prospect.
Tampa Bay Rays — Shane McClanahan
This one is a bit different. McClanahan has been good in the majors, but hasn't pitched in a big league game since 2023. If he can make it back to the mound in 2026, that would be a feel-good story in itself.
